PMBOK® GUIDE – THE STANDARD IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has published several standards in project management, of which “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)” is the most important. Many elements of the PMBOK® Guide have found their way into ISO 21500. The PMBOK® Guide is now recognized worldwide as the most important set of standards in project management and forms one of the foundations for certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP)® and is the basis for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®.

The current 7th version of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) describes the eight most important performance domains of a project, such as planning, stakeholder management, dealing with uncertainty, delivery and teamwork, in addition to the project management standard.

Another chapter is dedicated to adapting project management to the requirements of the respective project and its environment. For example, projects can be carried out using traditional waterfall, agile or hybrid methods. The final chapter presents frequently used models, methods and artifacts. These are described and explained in detail in the supplementary digital platform PMIstandards+.

The former “classic” structure of the PMBOK Guide with knowledge areas and processes, as it was still the basis of the 6th edition, has been abandoned. However, the knowledge areas for managing scope, time, costs, risk, quality, personnel, stakeholders, communication and procurement in the project are still relevant today, only structured in a more modern and flexible way to reflect different project environments.

The PMBOK® Guide is available in 12 languages. In addition to English, it is also available in German, Italian, French, Russian, Hindi and Chinese. In other words, a truly global standard. PMI members receive the PMBOK® Guide free of charge as a pdf. And of course it is also available in bookshops or directly from PMI.
